What is Avebury?

Avebury is a stone circle, a henge and a village all at once.
A huge bank and ditch runs round the outside, and the stones stand inside it, partly around the houses, the pub and the church. The National Trust looks after it on behalf of English Heritage.
The stones are free to visit and open at any reasonable time in daylight. Avebury, its surroundings and Stonehenge together make up one World Heritage Site.
