Which buses
The nearest bus stop is Old Castle, on Castle Road (the A345), 0.4 miles from the Old Sarum entrance. English Heritage lists several Salisbury Reds routes from the city and the station. Times change, so check the operator’s timetable before you travel.
Salisbury Reds’ own timetables for the X4, X5 and 8 show main stops only and don’t name Old Castle, so confirm the stop with the operator before you rely on it.
From the station
English Heritage lists the Salisbury Reds X4 from Salisbury station, stop SB.
From the city centre
English Heritage lists the X4, X5 and 8 from Blue Boar Row, stop M.
The Stonehenge Tour
A hop on hop off tour bus from the station and city that calls at Old Sarum on its way to Stonehenge. Salisbury Reds says it runs on a diversion from 12 October 2026 to 12 March 2027.
Red 11 and PR11
These go to the newer housing estate that shares the Old Sarum name and the Beehive Park and Ride, not to the castle entrance. Beehive is about 1 kilometre further north by road.
From the stop to the entrance
From Old Castle it is 0.4 miles to the site. English Heritage’s directions for groups say to walk to the top of the lay by opposite the Harvester pub, follow the chalk footpath to the castle drive, turn left up the drive and cross the wooden bridge. The drive is narrow and shared with cars.
Bus or shared shuttle?
Sharing a shuttle costs from £3.63 each and takes you to the car park inside the earthworks, about 200 metres from the ticket office, at the time you choose. The bus is cheaper for most people and fine if the times suit you.
